More than 30,000 Ukrainians seeking safety have been supported by hosts in 17,000 Irish homes since February 2022 and there are thousands of people still in unsuitable state accommodation that costs much more.
With the general election just around the corner, it's an important opportunity to reflect on the role hosting has played in accommodating displaced Ukrainians who have sought refuge in Ireland since the invasion.
While we appreciate that you may have a lot to ask, we've come up with a few conversation starters you might find handy when chatting with politicians who stop by your door.
If you are already hosting or considering to sign up, share your experience and be sure to ask for the support you’d like to see in place for hosts and their guests going forward. Here are our 3 Simple Asks to consider:
Keep the ARP Going and Open It Up
Extend the Accommodation Recognition Payment (ARP) for another year and make it available to all refugee hosts - not just those hosting Ukrainians. It’s been a smart investment: it helps hosts, saves the State money (€53,000 per host household per year!*), and supports refugees to settle and thrive.
Give Refugees Certainty About Their Future
Refugees need clarity. Call for a clear plan for what happens after Temporary Protection ends in March 2026, including long-term residency options.
Stop Moving People Around
Stability is key. Push for proper, long-term accommodation instead of constantly relocating families. It’s better for kids, communities, and everyone involved.
Every conversation matters. Let’s make sure our next leaders understand the value of hosting and the role it plays in promoting diversity in our communities and our hope to have the current support continue.
